Seasons Have Thresholds Too
There is no doubt these days as to the direction the calendar is leading us. Like me, you probably have a pretty good idea of what is behind you once September rolls around.
I’ve spent much of this summer on deliberate early-morning assignments, practicing what it means to look a little closer.

South Coast Field Notes has been a wonderful place to share some of those early-morning experiences over the last few months. Recently, though, I left these familiar grounds for a couple of days in the Berkshires.
The coordinates on the map may have changed, but paying attention to the things around me really didn’t change that much at all.
The Clark - Williamstown, Massachusetts
Where most of the summer has kept me close to working harbors and sea-salted air, a trip west allowed for a drive through a much more mountainous landscape and an enjoyable visit to The Clark in Williamstown, Massachusetts.

The blessing on this particular day was bright sunshine on arrival after nearly three and a half hours of white-knuckle driving, mostly in pouring rain.
The trip was another reminder of what it’s like to tap into your curiosity simply by paying attention to what’s right in front of you.
Our overnight stay at Hotel DownStreet in North Adams was the perfect ending to a long day. Having a restaurant right downstairs meant I could park the car and leave it there for the rest of our stay.
Right across the street was Mass MoCA. We didn’t have time for another museum on this trip, but perhaps that’s reason enough to return.

So yeah, the entire year so far has been a series of thresholds.
This trip was like a hinge between two seasons. We didn’t head that way to see fall foliage, but even so, the color starting to appear left little doubt about which room we are about to enter next.
The composition that surrounded me for a couple of days may have changed a bit, but my level of curiosity stayed firmly intact.
Talk soon...
