The Quiet Turning
Town Beach Wesport, Massachusetts
The Allen's Pond area of Westport Point has become one of those places that reminds me why I enjoy getting up before sunrise.
Allen’s Pond area - Wesport, Massachusetts
Looking out toward that rocky shoreline and the freshly mowed hayfield are easy to miss if you are in a hurry. The only rushing I was doing that morning was getting there before the sun was completely up above the eastern horizon.
The fields are still green but the morning sun is reaching farther out across them than it was just a few weeks ago. It was a hoodie kind of a morning. Cool air filled the space but the early morning light removed the chill just as good as that first cup of coffee.
You can sense change on a morning like this. Not today. Not tomorrow. But soon.
John Deere - getting ready for another day.
The two John Deere tractors suggested that the work of this season was still underway.
There was something reassuring about it all. The landscape wasn’t rushing anywhere. It was simply living August.
Quiet times in Wesport
The South Coast has always been about more than just beaches and harbors.
There are farms, woodlots, stone walls and a map filled with endless backroads. Each with stories of their own. And the seasons? They all leave their own imprints around here.
None of them ask for our attention. They simply unfold into a series of moments that invite us to pay attention. I happen to call this one August.
There is nothing dramatic going on to take my breath away. Just a lot of ordinary things that don’t stay exactly as they are. I’m here to just breathe it all in.
Stonewalls & Hydrangeas on the South Coast
The hydrangeas are a great example. Together with the backroads, morning sunlight and old stone walls, they seem as though they'll last forever.
What a quiet transformation. Just a hint of past peak and they are still incredibly beautiful. Another example of August asking very little of us.
A time of year absent of demands for celebration, no announcement of its arrival with a lot of fanfare. August just shows up.
If you're lucky enough to be paying attention, you'll notice something quieter—a chance to appreciate what is still surrounding us before the landscape turns another page.
Perhaps that's why August has come to feel less like another month and more like a quiet turning. A gentle turning away from a summer that is still very much in our midst.
